Scaling applications: in house development or cross-disciplinary work?

One of the biggest challenges of high-performance computing is scaling efficiently scientific software on to massively parallel architectures. Whether porting legacy code or developing new methods, many design choices require knowledge of the application, expertise in algorithm selection and specialized programming skills.
